CANSKATE DIRECTOR POSITION

 

 

CanSkate Director for Forest Hill Figure Skating Club 

 

The CanSkate Director will keep the Forest Hill Figure Skating Club (FHFSC) growing and leading in the community by delivering successful Skate Canada/Skate Ontario approved skating programs, including but not limited to, CanSkate and PowerSkate programs.  This position will ensure that there is a strong progression for success into the STARSkate program. Our club community works towards a common goal: offering quality skating programs within a positive, inclusive environment.  

 

This position requires an individual who is detailed and people oriented. The position will report directly to the Board of Directors and collaborate with the Club Administrator and Technical Director, and work closely with all coaches that are part of the Club programs.  

Duties include, but are not limited to: 

Program Management: 

  1. Planning
    1. Collaborate with the Club Administrator, Technical Director, and Board of Directors on season planning and execution.
    2. Create a coaching schedule for each CanSkate and PowerSkate session, ensuring opportunities for all eligible coaches based on availability, seniority, and program needs.
  2. Pre-Session Preparation:
    1. Purchase teaching aids and supplies for the season, coordinating with the Coaching Team to meet program needs.
    2. Select and edit music for CanSkate prior to each session.
    3. Organize skaters into groups, adhering to Skate Canada ratios, prepare color-coded nametags, and ensure skater groups are updated in Uplifter.
    4. Manage the inventory of Skate Canada badges and ribbons.
  3. Session Delivery:
    1. Attend all CanSkate and PowerSkate sessions to supervise and ensure smooth operation. A Supervising Coach may be assigned with Board approval, with remuneration from the CanSkate Director’s salary.
    2. Ensure regular skater assessments by the Coaching Team, maintain progress sheets, and input skater progress into Uplifter to keep accurate records.
    3. Organize special Theme Days throughout the season.
    4. Distribute badges and ribbons, providing updates to parents.
    5. Conduct parent information sessions during weeks 3 or 4 for Fall/Winter/Spring programs and arrange coaching coverage for these sessions.
  4. Post-Session:
    1. Ensure report cards are issued to all program skaters at the end of each session.
    2. Provide feedback and evaluations to Program Assistants twice per season.

 

Leadership:

    1. Determine Coaching Team and Program Assistant needs based on registration and groupings.
    2. Deliver Program Assistant training at the start of each season and as needed, in consultation with the Board. Provide ongoing development, mentoring, and feedback to Program Assistants and new coaches.
    3. Schedule Program Assistants for sessions based on availability and program needs.
    4. Assign specific duties to Coaching Team and Program Assistants for each session.
    5. Ensure coaching absences are covered and lead session setup/takedown activities.
    6. Offer suggestions for program improvements to the Board throughout the season.
    7. Provide end-of-season evaluations for coaches.

Collaboration:

    1. Provide regular updates to the FHFSC Board and be available to address parent queries and resolve issues, in person, phone, or by email.
    2. Identify and recommend skaters for the PreStar Program to the Competitive Director.
    3. Prepare monthly Coaching Team tracking sheets for invoice reconciliation by the Club Administrator.
    4. Track Program Assistant hours for credit or volunteer hours and submit reports to the Club Administrator/Bookkeeper twice annually.
    5. Respond to escalated emails from the Club Administrator regarding CanSkate and PowerSkate programs.
    6. Work with the Club Administrator and Board to plan and execute club events, including Performance Days and Year-End Show.

 

             Key Skills

  1. Dynamic and motivated. 
  2. Highly developed organizational skills. 
  3. Well-developed customer service skills with an interest in working with and serving people. 
  4. Proficient with Word, Excel and Uplifter. 
  5. Has experience with programs within Skate Canada. 
  6. Ability to maintain a flexible schedule and able to work evenings and weekends. 
  7. NCCP Regional Coach certified or higher. 
  8. Minimum of 3 years’ experience coaching CanSkate Program(s). 
  9. Registered and in good standing with Skate Canada. 

 

This position is a salaried position that is in addition to your existing coaching contract with the Club, if applicable. You may continue to run your own coaching business in tandem with this position. Compensation for the CanSkate Director position will be made based on agreed upon monthly hours required to fulfil the demands of the position and a mutually agreed to package monthly rate.

  • Skate Canada professional with a minimum Regional Coach in-training
    status.
  • In Good Standing: To be a Registered Skate Canada Professional Coach in
    Good Standing, the following is required:
  1. Must hold a valid first aid certificate.
  2. Backcheck Screening
  3. NCCP certified coaches must maintain a renewed NCCP certification
    status as per the Coaching Association of Canada’s (CAC)
    Maintenance of Certification Policy.
  4. Skate Canada Code of Ethics
  5. Completed the Respect in Sport Activity Leader Training. A coach
    must be re-certified in this training every 3 years

The FHFSC Skating Club ( www.fhfsc.ca ) is a Skate Canada-sanctioned club located at the Larry Grossman Arena, Toronto, Ontario . For close to 50 years, we have been running programs suitable for everyone from beginner (children and adult) to the most skilled skater.
